Some 2,000 tonnes of cargo and mail moved through Lianyungang Huaguoshan International Airport (IATA: LYG) in 2023 – up 54.3 percent and still far below its design capacity of 24,000 tonnes a year, including 7,500 tonnes through a 1,300-square-metre international cargo area. Opened in December 2021 with a 2,800-metre class-4D runway, the airport serves a city better known as the eastern terminus of the New Eurasian Land Bridge rail corridor to Europe and home to one of China's major container seaports. Current airfreight is dominated by domestic shipments of chemicals and electronics from local industry. Large or intercontinental consignments route via Shanghai Pudong (PVG), while LYG suits urgent regional cargo and sea-air combinations with the port.
