## Description

Leipzig/Halle Airport (IATA: LEJ, ICAO: EDDP) is built around the night: since 2008 it has served as the European hub of DHL Express, and freighters may take off and land here 24 hours a day - a permission few German airports hold. The result is around 1.38 million tonnes of cargo in 2024, making LEJ Germany's second-largest freight airport after Frankfurt and one of Europe's top five, against a modest 2.5 million passengers. Aerologic, the Boeing 777F joint venture of DHL and Lufthansa Cargo, has its home base at the airport, and Amazon Air opened its first European air gateway here in 2020. In 2024 DHL and operator Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG extended their partnership through 2053, locking in the site's long-term future. Heavy lift is the second speciality: Antonov Airlines stationed its An-124 freighters in Schkeuditz for years under the NATO SALIS charter programme, and outsize project cargo remains routine business. Forwarders reach the site directly from the A9 and A14 motorways; Leipzig lies about 18 kilometres away, Halle around 20, and a dedicated railway station on the Magdeburg-Leipzig line adds rail access.
