## Description

Home of 322 Squadron and its F-35A Lightning II jets, Leeuwarden Air Base (IATA: LWR, ICAO: EHLW) in Friesland is one of two operational fighter bases of the Royal Netherlands Air Force, fully converted to the F-35 since 2019. The site dates back to 1938 and was heavily expanded by German occupiers during the Second World War. In 2025 Leeuwarden hosted the large-scale NATO exercise "Ramstein Flag" with combat aircraft from several allied nations, and it continues to run the long-standing "Frisian Flag" exercise. There is no civilian traffic and no commercial air cargo; the nearest freight option is Groningen Airport Eelde (IATA: GRQ, approx. 60 km).
