## Description

A brand-new Terminal 3 and two additional runways went live at Lanzhou Zhongchuan in March 2025 as part of the airport's Phase 3 expansion, targeting around 300,000 tonnes of annual cargo capacity — roughly 129 percent above 2019 levels — for an airport whose freight role otherwise remains modest. Zhongchuan serves the Gansu capital from some 70 kilometres outside the city, one of the longest airport transfers in China, bridged by an intercity rail link of around 40 minutes. Cargo consists mainly of belly freight: express shipments, spare parts for the local petrochemical industry and regional foodstuffs. There is no scheduled freighter network; occasional charters cover peaks. For intercontinental main legs, forwarders route via Xi'an Xianyang (XIY), one of western China's major cargo airports, roughly six hours away on the motorway. Lanzhou's wider logistics relevance comes from its position on the Belt and Road rail corridors, where China–Europe block trains complement air freight.
