## Description

"Oh, the humanity" – the words were spoken here: the Hindenburg burned at Lakehurst on May 6, 1937, ending the airship era at what was then the US Navy's lighter-than-air station. The colossal airship hangars still stand at Maxfield Field, now part of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, where the Navy tests aircraft carrier catapult and arresting gear systems on land-based rigs. There is no civilian aviation and no cargo handling of any kind. Commercial air freight for the region moves through Newark or Philadelphia; Lakehurst belongs to history and to test engineering.
