## Description

Some 50 kilometres northwest of Nouméa, La Tontouta is New Caledonia's sole international airport and, since March 2026, the single base for domestic carrier Air Calédonie as well. Aircalin has flown long-haul routes from here since 1987, while ground and cargo handling is provided by Pacific Airport (Engie). Outbound air freight centres on perishables — New Caledonia's prized blue shrimp, chilled seafood, mail and high-value consignments — whereas the territory's nickel exports move by sea. The airport links to Nouméa and its port via the RT1 territorial road, making it the consolidation point for shipments to the Loyalty Islands and the northern province. Customs follow French and EU external-trade rules adapted to the overseas-collectivity status. For freight forwarders it is the only air-cargo door to the archipelago.
