## Description

Long a domestic gateway on the shores of Lake Victoria, Kisumu (KIS) gained international status in 2011 and is now building a cargo role for western Kenya. Its first export freight flight in years departed in January 2022 carrying 1.8 tonnes of fresh green chilli, with carriers targeting around 6 tonnes per rotation. A dedicated cargo village with cold stores, consolidation space and fumigation facilities is being developed to serve fish, avocado, mango and vegetable exports from the lake region. Volumes remain modest and operations have at times been intermittent, so large, schedule-critical shipments still move via Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO) in Nairobi. Kisumu is cargo-capable in principle, with an export business still in its early stages.
