## Description

Few African cargo facilities are as purpose-built as the one at King Shaka International. Opened in 2010 at La Mercy, about 35 km north of Durban, the airport is anchored for freight by the Dube Cargo Terminal—a fully mechanised, automated facility, the second of its kind in Africa, engineered for up to two million tonnes a year over the long term. It forms part of the Dube TradePort special economic zone and connects by an overhead conveyor air-bridge to the Dube TradeHouse, home to forwarders and logistics providers. Swissport has handled ground services here since 2008, and Air Menzies International is also present. Clearance runs through the South African Revenue Service (SARS), while the SEZ status brings customs and tax incentives. The decisive advantage is proximity to the Port of Durban, the busiest seaport in southern Africa, which favours combined sea-air supply chains. The N2 motorway ties the precinct to Durban and the KwaZulu-Natal hinterland. For South Africa's east coast, DUR is the leading freight location.
