## Description

Khartoum International Airport (KRT) is a hub in recovery rather than full operation. Sudan's principal gateway was shut from 15 April 2023, when the civil war between the national army and the Rapid Support Forces turned the airfield into a battleground that wrecked terminals and destroyed parked aircraft. A phased reopening began in October 2025, with the first scheduled domestic flight in February 2026 and the first post-war international arrival, a Kuwait Airways service, on 28 April 2026 — progress shadowed by continuing drone attacks. Before the war KRT was the country's main air-freight gateway and the home base of Sudan Airways, connected to Gulf and East African hubs. Sudan's signature export cargo includes gum arabic — the country supplies the bulk of world demand for this food-industry staple — alongside sesame, livestock and gold. Through the recovery, freight capacity stays limited, and much of Sudan's trade still flows through Port Sudan on the Red Sea, by air (PZU) and through its seaport. Customs is handled by the Sudan Customs Authority. Shippers with time-critical cargo to Sudan should track NOTAMs and the security situation in Khartoum closely.
