## Description

Around 9,280 tonnes of cargo a year pass through Kenneth Kaunda International (LUN), Zambia's only airport built for international freight. Its Freight Village offers some 9,000 m² of warehousing with air-conditioned, chilled and deep-freeze rooms plus freighter docks, handled by operators such as ZEGA Limited. Customs clearance runs through the Zambia Revenue Authority and, for agricultural goods, the Ministry of Agriculture, with electronic pre-clearance and bonded storage available. Belly capacity comes from Emirates SkyCargo and Qatar Cargo toward the Gulf, and from Ethiopian Cargo, Kenya Airways and RwandAir across Africa, while Airlink links the southern African region. High-value exports — notably emeralds from the nearby Kagem mine, the world's largest — and time-critical fresh produce move by air, whereas bulk copper relies on road and the TAZARA railway to the seaports of Dar es Salaam, Durban and Walvis Bay. Sitting at roughly 1,150 m above sea level, Lusaka's elevation affects freighter take-off performance. A new passenger terminal opened in 2021, lifting the airport's overall throughput.
