## Description

When Kagoshima's airport moved from the coastal Kamoike site to a plateau near Kirishima in 1972, it gained room that still serves it today. Kagoshima Airport (IATA: KOJ) handled around 37,000 tonnes of freight and mail in 2022, almost all of it domestic belly cargo on ANA and JAL trunk routes to Tokyo and Osaka. The load reflects the prefecture's farm economy: wagyu beef, green tea, sweet potatoes and fresh fish. International passenger flights link the city with Seoul, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taipei, but there are no scheduled freighter services — intercontinental shipments are best routed via Fukuoka or Kansai. The airport sits about 30 kilometres northeast of Kagoshima city with direct access to the Kyushu Expressway. It also acts as the supply base for the Amami island chain, which depends heavily on air links. One regional factor for planners: ash plumes from the Sakurajima volcano can occasionally disrupt operations.
