## Description

Airlink is the only scheduled operator at K. D. Matanzima Airport (UTT, ICAO FAUT) in Mthatha, running some 21 flights a week to Johannesburg's O. R. Tambo with regional aircraft. The runway was extended to 2,600 metres in a roughly R490 million project completed in 2013, which allows larger types, but no cargo terminal or regular freighter service followed. Air freight consequently travels as belly cargo on those passenger flights, or goes by road down the N2 to East London (ELS) some 200 km to the south-west, and on to Durban (DUR) for larger volumes. Customs and export formalities for third-country goods are handled at the gateway airport rather than in Mthatha. Announced upgrades cover a new terminal building, a lit helipad, approach lighting and hangar refurbishment; dedicated freight facilities are not confirmed as part of that programme. Forwarders should therefore treat UTT as a belly-cargo and road-feeder point serving the Eastern Cape region around Qunu, Nelson Mandela's home village.
