## Description

Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), Tanzania's principal freight gateway, moved around 29,000 tonnes of air cargo in 2024 - well below the roughly 100,000-tonne annual capacity of its three Swissport-run warehouses (about 10,000 square metres total), which include cold rooms for perishables. Outbound traffic is led by fish and seafood, cut flowers, vegetables and tobacco, while inbound flows are mainly manufactured and consumer goods. Belly capacity comes from the long-haul networks of Qatar Airways, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian and Kenya Airways, supplemented by freighter services from Ethiopian Cargo and Astral Aviation. Customs clearance is handled by the Tanzania Revenue Authority, with bonded warehousing available on site. The Port of Dar es Salaam lies just a few kilometres away — one of East Africa's largest seaports and the principal supply route for landlocked Zambia, Malawi and the DR Congo. Rail links via the Central Line, the TAZARA railway and the new standard-gauge railway (SGR) tie the airport into the national network and make sea-air routings practical. The new Terminal 3, operational from 2024, is adding further belly capacity on passenger services.
