## Description

Roughly 6,200 tonnes of international and 2,300 tonnes of domestic freight pass through South Sudan's airports each year, and Juba International Airport (JUB) handles the lion's share. Located about 5 km north-east of central Juba, it is the landlocked country's principal air access point. Despite that role, the airport has no dedicated cargo terminal and no bulk-handling facilities; storage relies on three private bonded warehouses, part of which serve as the airport's customs warehouse. Much of the cargo is humanitarian: UNMISS, UNHAS, the World Food Programme, the ICRC and numerous NGOs run relief flights, supported by freighter operators such as Magma Aviation. A new terminal building entered service in 2026, alongside night operations and upgraded security and parking. With no significant railways and oil exported by pipeline through Sudan rather than by air, onward movement from JUB depends on a patchy road network. For forwarders, the airport is less a conventional cargo hub than the decisive air link into a hard-to-reach region. Regular general cargo and cold-chain shipments require careful local planning of customs and trucking.
