## Description

Varadero's Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (IATA VRA, ICAO MUVR) is a leisure gateway first and foremost, handling roughly a quarter of all Cuban air traffic as the country's second-busiest field. Opened in 1989 to absorb a surge of international tourists, it concentrates on charter and scheduled services to Canada — Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver — plus Miami. Its single terminal and one runway of more than 3,500 m are configured for holiday passengers rather than freight. There is no dedicated cargo terminal here, and air freight is limited to belly space on passenger aircraft. For any planned shipment to or from Cuba, José Martí (HAV) and its Aerovaradero terminal, about 130 km to the west, are the practical choice. The airport's value lies in its proximity to the Varadero resort peninsula, which drives a strongly seasonal traffic pattern. Exporters in the Matanzas region are best served by consolidating through Havana.
