## Description

Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO) is the cargo gateway of East Africa's horticultural economy. Kenya ships more than 200,000 tonnes of cut flowers a year, and roughly 80% of that volume moves through JKIA, much of it roses bound for European auctions and supermarkets. The cargo complex is built around perishables, with extensive cold-chain storage among its roughly 1.2 million tonnes of annual handling capacity. Kenya Airways Cargo and Nairobi-based freighter specialist Astral Aviation anchor the carrier mix, alongside Qatar Airways Cargo, Turkish Cargo, Emirates SkyCargo, Etihad Cargo and Ethiopian Cargo. Ground handling and perishable forwarding are shared by Swissport, Siginon and Airflo, supported by Kenya's Export Processing Zones for duty-relieved export processing. Road links and the Standard Gauge Railway tie NBO to the seaport of Mombasa, enabling sea-air options. A 2024 squeeze, when some carriers trimmed freighter slots in favour of richer routes, exposed how dependent the hub is on seasonal flower peaks. Even so, no other airport in the region matches its perishable throughput.
