## Description

Fresh fish, shrimp, tropical fruit and vegetables make up the bulk of what leaves Suriname by air – and almost all of it passes through Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport (PBM). Sitting about 45 km south of Paramaribo near Zandery, PBM is the country's only international gateway for both passengers and freight. Passenger traffic is modest, served chiefly by Surinam Airways and KLM. Cargo moves through a dedicated freight terminal operated by Sur Air Cargo Services, including a cold-storage unit with five chambers and roughly 51 tonnes of capacity for perishables. Much of the tonnage travels as belly cargo on scheduled flights to Amsterdam and the wider Caribbean. The runway is among the longest in the region (about 3,480 m) and famously handled the Antonov An-225 in 2010. Road haulage links the airport to Paramaribo; Suriname has effectively no rail network, so trucks handle all onward distribution. Customs clearance and bonded storage are managed on-site by Surinamese authorities, making PBM the single air route in and out of the country for forwarders.
