## Description

Fresh Atlantic tuna and pineapples from the greenhouses of São Miguel: when the Azores export perishables, they fly out of Ponta Delgada. João Paulo II Airport (IATA: PDL, ICAO: LPPD) is the archipelago's largest airport and home base of Azores Airlines and its regional arm SATA Air Açores, which move mail and freight as well as passengers between the nine islands and the mainland. Around 2.5 million passengers use the field each year; Ryanair and TAP connect Lisbon and Porto, with seasonal North America routes on top. Freight volumes stay modest but are indispensable to island supply: medicines, spare parts and urgent goods arrive by air, while the bulk of merchandise comes by ship through Ponta Delgada's seaport. A cargo terminal with customs clearance operates on site. The airport is named after Pope John Paul II, who visited the Azores in 1991 — a dedication it shares with Bari, whose airport carries his civil name, Karol Wojtyła. Central Ponta Delgada lies barely two kilometres away; VINCI subsidiary ANA runs the operation.
