## Description

Grand Turk receives far more visitors by ship than by aeroplane: the Grand Turk Cruise Center lies about 1.6 kilometres from JAGS McCartney International Airport (IATA GDT, ICAO MBGT), and it is the cruise calls rather than the flight schedule that fill the island. Operated by the Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority and named after national founder James Alexander George Smith McCartney, GDT is the territory's second airport after Providenciales (PLS) and serves the capital Cockburn Town, roughly 1.6 kilometres to the north. A single 1,939-metre asphalt runway 12/30 and one terminal make up the facility; there is no cargo terminal, no freighter service and no cold chain. InterCaribbean Airways and Caicos Express Airways fly regional and domestic sectors to Providenciales and the neighbouring islands, so air freight amounts to belly loads — mail, courier parcels, spare parts and urgent medical consignments. Containers, construction materials and bulk goods arrive through the island port, while consolidated air cargo for the Turks and Caicos clears at Providenciales (PLS), fed mainly from Miami (MIA). Forwarders should treat GDT as a feeder point and build transit times around the Providenciales connection rather than around GDT itself.
