## Description

Until November 2022 Itanagar was one of the few Indian state capitals without an airport; Donyi Polo Airport (IATA: HGI, ICAO: VEHO) at Hollongi changed that as Arunachal Pradesh's first purpose-built commercial airport, and it has grown into a passenger-only operation. In the Indian financial year from April 2025 to March 2026 it handled 199,823 passengers and 1,943 aircraft movements, both up roughly 17 per cent year on year, against cargo of just 25.8 tonnes. That tonnage is belly load on scheduled passenger aircraft: the airport, owned by the Airports Authority of India, has no freight terminal, no dedicated freighter service and no customs clearance for cargo. IndiGo links Itanagar with Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Chennai, while Alliance Air serves Guwahati and Tezu. The site lies about 14 km south of the state capital. The region's horticultural output, from kiwifruit and mandarins to ginger, still leaves the state largely by road. Forwarders handling air freight for Arunachal Pradesh route consignments through Guwahati (IATA: GAU), a few hours away on the NH-415 and NH-15, with Kolkata (IATA: CCU) as the onward international gateway.
