## Description

Few places show the contest between transport modes as starkly as Itaituba. Its riverside district of Miritituba is a soybean transshipment point on the BR-163 corridor, moving up to 18 million tonnes a year from Mato Grosso onto Tapajós barges bound for Santarém and Barcarena. Road brings the grain in, river carries it out — and the air plays almost no part: Itaituba Airport (ITB) runs regional passenger flights with no cargo terminal. Urgent airfreight is routed downstream via Santarém (STM) or on to Belém. The proposed Ferrogrão railway could yet add a fourth mode to the mix.
