## Description

Around 2.4 million tonnes of soybeans moved through Itacoatiara in the most recent harvest, all of it by river and none of it through the town's airport. Itacoatiara Airport (IATA: ITA, ICAO: SBIC), opened in 1988 some 8 km outside town with an asphalt runway of roughly 1,520 m, currently has no scheduled airline service and offers no cargo terminal, handling agent or customs post for air freight. The grain moves instead through the private Hermasa terminal of the Amaggi group, in operation since 1997, where barges arriving from Mato Grosso via Porto Velho and the Madeira River transfer to ocean-going vessels. Loading runs at about 1,500 tonnes per hour and the expanded floating terminal reaches up to 3,000 tonnes per hour, feeding shipments to Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Air freight for the region is handled 176 km to the west at Manaus (IATA: MAO), the cargo airport of the Manaus Free Trade Zone, with the AM-010 highway providing the trucking link.
