## Description

A TZS 60 billion upgrade has given Iringa Airport at Nduli (IATA: IRI, ICAO: HTIR) a 2,100 by 30 metre runway, a 155-metre taxiway, an apron of 180 by 126 metres and all-weather navigation aids. Larger aircraft returned on 22 February 2025 after an eight-year absence: Air Tanzania serves Dar es Salaam three times a week with Bombardier Q400 equipment, alongside Precision Air and Auric Air. The terminal is sized for 100 arriving and 100 departing passengers at a time, and there is still no cargo terminal or dedicated freight handling — air freight moves only as belly load on those regional flights. The Southern Highlands around Iringa live on tea, tobacco, maize and timber, and those exports travel almost entirely by truck along the TANZAM highway to the Port of Dar es Salaam, supplemented by the TAZARA railway with a station at Makambako to the southwest. Time-critical and international shipments route through Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), or Kilimanjaro (JRO) for the north, with customs clearance by the Tanzania Revenue Authority at those gateways rather than at Iringa.
