Road and air do not compete on equal terms in Manipur: when the hill state's two highways are blocked, Imphal's Bir Tikendrajit International Airport (IATA: IMF, ICAO: VEIM) becomes the only reliable supply route. In the Indian financial year from April 2025 to March 2026 it handled roughly 6,272 tonnes of freight and some 1.36 million passengers across just 10,542 aircraft movements. As of September 2026 IndiGo, Air India Express and Alliance Air serve the airport, with Guwahati (GAU) accounting for about 24 weekly departures or some 35 per cent of capacity, ahead of Delhi and Kolkata. Typical outbound goods are perishables such as local fruit and handloom textiles, with consumer goods and pharmaceuticals moving inbound. For larger consignments and international customs clearance, forwarders consolidate through Kolkata (CCU) or Guwahati (GAU).
