## Description

The code ILS marks Ilopango International Airport, once San Salvador's primary gateway until Comalapa (SAL) took over scheduled traffic in 1980. Sitting on the eastern edge of the capital at about 600 m elevation, the field is now controlled chiefly by the Salvadoran Air Force and used for military, charter, air-taxi and air-ambulance flights. It runs no scheduled cargo operations; that role is consolidated at Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport (SAL) some 40 km to the south. Forwarders should therefore route freight through SAL, which offers a dedicated cargo terminal and customs clearance.
