## Description

The Salvadoran Air Force, not a cargo operator, is the dominant user of Ilopango International Airport (IATA: ILS, ICAO: MSSS) since scheduled traffic moved to Comalapa in 1980. The field lies at roughly 620 metres above sea level on the eastern edge of San Salvador, only a few kilometres from the city centre, and now handles military, business and charter flights, air taxis and air ambulance work. There is no freight terminal, no freighter handling and no customs post for commercial goods. All of El Salvador's air cargo is concentrated at El Salvador International Airport Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero (SAL, MSLP), about 40 kilometres south towards the Pacific coast, where state operator CEPA runs cargo handling and customs clearance — mainly for maquila textiles, coffee and seafood. With tourism growing and SAL nearing its limits, wider civil use of Ilopango is under discussion, though no concrete freight plans are confirmed. Guatemala City (GUA) serves as the region's second air-cargo option, roughly half a day of trucking away on the Pan-American Highway. Locally, Ilopango is best known for its annual air show, which draws tens of thousands of spectators.
