## Description

Southwest Alaska, on the shore of the state's largest lake and off the road system entirely, roughly 320 kilometres southwest of Anchorage: that is the setting of Iliamna Airport (IATA: ILI, ICAO: PAIL), the supply point for the villages around Lake Iliamna and the salmon lodges on Bristol Bay's headwaters. Since Ravn Alaska shut down in August 2025, Lake & Peninsula Airlines and Iliamna Air Taxi have carried the scheduled passenger and freight runs from Anchorage and redistributed onward to smaller strips. Nothing arrives overland: freight, fuel and building materials come by air or, in summer, via a short portage from Cook Inlet. A large share of goods travels under the US Postal Service bypass mail programme, in which palletised shipments go straight to the air carriers; without that subsidised channel grocery prices in the region would be far higher. The area is known worldwide for the proposed Pebble copper-gold mine, blocked by the EPA in 2023 under the Clean Water Act; oral arguments were heard in federal court in Anchorage on 25 June 2026 and a ruling from Judge Gleason is expected before the end of the year. Time-critical or larger consignments are consolidated at Anchorage (ANC), the state's cargo gateway.
