## Description

About 400 trucks a day cross into Iraq at Mehran in Ilam province, while Ilam Airport (IATA: IIL, ICAO: OICI) itself was down to a single scheduled flight a week in mid-2026. The airport sits at roughly 1,340 metres in the mountains of western Iran, some 500 km from the capital, and is served domestically by Iran Aseman, Mahan Air and Yazd Airways to Tehran Mehrabad (THR), about 1h10 in the air. It has no cargo terminal, no international customs post and no dangerous-goods acceptance, so air freight is limited to belly space on those few passenger services. The province's real trade moves by road: in an eleven-month period more than 2.2 million tonnes of goods worth around USD 1.2 billion were exported through Mehran, mainly petrochemicals, agricultural produce, construction materials such as cement, tiles, stone and rebar, and plastics, with the Mehran Free Zone being developed into a joint economic area with Iraq. During the Arbaeen pilgrimage roughly half of all pilgrims pass through Mehran, which sharply changes capacity and waiting times for commercial traffic. Air cargo for the province is consolidated at Tehran Imam Khomeini (IKA), with Kermanshah (KSH) the nearest western alternative.
