## Description

An airport code is not the same thing as a cargo option: Ignace Municipal Airport (ZUC/CZUC) in northwestern Ontario is a municipal field with no cargo terminal and no scheduled freight service. The town sits on Trans-Canada Highway 17 and beside the transcontinental rail main line, and goods reach it by truck and rail almost without exception. Flight activity consists of general aviation, provincial water bombers and occasional charters; there is no customs post and no dangerous-goods acceptance. Air freight for the area is consolidated at Thunder Bay (YQT), roughly 250 road kilometres east, and trucked in by road feeder service, with Winnipeg (YWG) the second gateway. The region has moved into the spotlight since Ignace and Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation were selected to host Canada's deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel: in June 2026 Ottawa referred the project to its Major Projects Office, with about a decade of construction ahead and operations from the 2040s. No expansion of ZUC has been announced in connection with it.
