## Description

Wartime origins still shape Ie Island's airfield: built during the Second World War and later rebuilt for civil use, Iejima Airport (IEJ/RORE) today works a single 1,500-metre asphalt runway and records essentially no freight, the last published Japanese statistics showing zero tonnes of cargo. No scheduled airline serves the field; traffic consists of charters, general aviation and medical flights. There is no cargo terminal, no customs office and no dangerous-goods acceptance. Supplies for the island arrive on the Motobu ferry, which also carries trucks. Air freight for Okinawa moves through Naha (OKA), the prefecture's principal cargo airport, with Ishigaki (ISG) covering the southern islands. A 2015 plan to extend the runway to 2,000 metres and add a new terminal for jet service has not been carried out.
