## Description

Ibaraki Airport (IBR/RJAH) at Omitama, about 85 km northeast of Tokyo, opened its civil terminal in 2010 on the site of the JASDF Hyakuri air base and has marketed itself ever since as the low-cost alternative to the crowded Tokyo airports. Traffic remains modest: the most recent published figures show 538,227 passengers and around 300 tonnes of cargo in 2015. Operations are built around low-cost carriers, and in 2025 Korean carrier Aero K added Incheon and Cheongju services, with the Cheongju route due to be cut from June 2026. No cargo terminal, cold chain or dangerous-goods handling is documented at the airport, so air freight is confined to belly space on a thin schedule of passenger flights. Shippers in Ibaraki prefecture, home to chemical, machinery and food industries, use Tokyo Narita (NRT) as their gateway, roughly 100 km away via the Higashi-Kanto and Kita-Kanto expressways, with Haneda (HND) adding intra-Asian capacity. In air cargo terms, Ibaraki is a passenger airport rather than a freight location.
