## Description

Opened in 1965 and once counted among the longest runways in the region, Hwange National Park Airport (IATA: HWN, ICAO: FVWN) at Gwayi River Farms in north-western Zimbabwe currently sees no scheduled airline at all. The strip runs roughly 4,600 m but is only 30 m wide, rated for aircraft up to Boeing 737-200 size, and has no runway lighting, which rules out night operations. Fastjet launched scheduled service in April 2023 and later withdrew it; in any case there is no cargo terminal, no handling agent and no goods customs office on site. Lodges around Zimbabwe's largest national park are resupplied by truck on the A8 Bulawayo–Victoria Falls road, while coal and heavy freight move on the National Railways of Zimbabwe line through Hwange. Realistic air freight options are Victoria Falls (VFA) some 180 km north-west and Harare (HRE) for international customs clearance, with Bulawayo (BUQ) just over 300 road kilometres to the south-east. The Airports Company of Zimbabwe has put preliminary work on the cracked runway surface alone at around US$5 million, on top of lighting and water and sewer upgrades. Until that money arrives, HWN remains a tourism airstrip rather than a freight point.
