## Description

Commissioned in 1941 and paved three decades later, Caxias do Sul's Hugo Cantergiani Airport (IATA: CXJ, ICAO: SBCX) grew alongside the densest industrial belt in inland Rio Grande do Sul and today handles scheduled cargo as well as passengers. The Serra Gaúcha around it builds metal goods, machinery and auto components and bottles much of Brazil's fine wine, and Azul, GOL and LATAM serve the field from São Paulo and other domestic points. Time-critical parts move well as belly freight, while heavy and intercontinental consignments are funnelled through Porto Alegre Salgado Filho (POA), about 130 kilometres south on the BR-116. The runway of roughly 1,500 metres confines operations to narrowbodies and turboprops, so no freighter services call here. The municipally run airport also supports corporate flights and medical missions, including organ and patient transfers. Its value as a fallback showed after the Rio Grande do Sul floods of May 2024, when Porto Alegre lost scheduled traffic for months and Caxias do Sul absorbed additional services for the region.
