## Description

One of the world's densest concentrations of chip fabs sits next door, yet not a kilogram of freight leaves through Hsinchu Air Base (IATA HSZ, ICAO RCPO). The field on the edge of Hsinchu City is used solely by Taiwan's air force: the 499th Tactical Fighter Wing, the island's only Mirage 2000-5 operator, flies from here with its 41st, 42nd and 48th squadrons, and there is no civilian passenger or cargo traffic, no cargo terminal, customs post or handling agent. In August 2026 the base ran Han Kuang exercise drills covering everything from an incoming air strike to a counter-offensive, including emergency runway repair. The output of the adjacent Hsinchu Science Park — TSMC and hundreds of suppliers, a substantial share of global semiconductor production — instead travels by truck on National Freeway 1 to Taoyuan International (TPE), about 50 kilometres north, where it is cleared and loaded inside the airport free trade zone. Taichung (RMQ) serves as a southern fallback. For forwarders, HSZ is a map reference, not a gateway.
