## Description

More than USD 1 billion in damage, with roughly USD 500 million needed for the airfield alone: that is Antonov State Enterprise's own estimate of what the war did to Hostomel, the Antonov Airport (ICAO UKKM, no IATA code) north-west of Kyiv. Until February 2022 it was the home base of Antonov Airlines and the world's first address for outsize air cargo; the sole An-225 "Mriya" was destroyed here in the opening battle of the invasion, along with hangars, laboratories and the flight-test base. No commercial freight has moved through since, and Ukrainian airspace remains closed to civil aviation. Reconstruction plans foresee an essentially new airport with a cargo terminal and a small passenger terminal, partly privately financed, while a Mriya rebuild remains a declared intention rather than a funded programme with a delivery date. Forwarders therefore route Ukraine-bound air freight through neighbouring countries, chiefly Rzeszów-Jasionka (RZE) close to the border and Warsaw (WAW), with onward trucking across the frontier. Customs formalities follow EU rules at the departure airport and Ukrainian customs law from the border onward. Hostomel is not a usable cargo gateway today.
