## Description

Three 3.8-kilometre runways now feed the cargo apron at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG), the newest sitting right beside it — shorter taxi times for freighters at the world's busiest cargo airport. On a rolling 12-month basis HKG handled 5.14 million tonnes (up 3.0%), topping the ACI ranking for the 15th time since 2010, and the momentum carried into 2026: 2.06 million tonnes in the first five months (+3.6%), with May alone up 3.0% to 435,000 tonnes on a 23.2% surge in transshipment. Hong Kong is a free port, so imports are generally duty-free and transit clearance stays fast. Hactl's SuperTerminal 1, the Cathay Cargo Terminal and Asia Airfreight Terminal share the handling; DHL Express runs its Central Asia Hub on the field and UPS, which bases Asia-Pacific operations here, is expanding a new facility. Cathay Cargo flies the largest freighter mainline, alongside FedEx, UPS and a dense web of Asian cargo carriers, while 61 million passengers in 2025 add belly capacity across intercontinental routes. The three-runway system has run at full capacity since late 2024 and the expanded Terminal 2 reopened in May 2026. Specialities range from Pearl River Delta e-commerce and electronics to GDP-certified pharmaceutical handling. The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge links the western delta, the HKIA Logistics Park in Dongguan pre-clears mainland cargo for sea-air transfer, and the Kwai Tsing container terminals lie about 20 kilometres away.
