## Description

Up to 700 million euros and 47 heavy-lift helicopters: those two figures define what is happening at Holzdorf Air Base (ICAO: ETSH) on the border between Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg, east of Jessen and north of Herzberg. The German Air Force currently bases Helicopter Wing 64 and Air Operations Control Centre 3 here, and a dedicated task force is driving an accelerated build-out that will host part of the Arrow 3 ground-based missile defence system and make Holzdorf the main operating base for 47 Boeing CH-47F Chinooks, arriving in three flying squadrons from 2027. None of this opens the field to commerce: there is no IATA code, no scheduled traffic, no public cargo handling and no customs post for trade goods. Air freight for the region between Wittenberg, Herzberg and Torgau is instead routed through Leipzig/Halle (LEJ) about 80 kilometres to the south-west, DHL's European air hub, or through Berlin Brandenburg (BER) roughly 100 kilometres north. For forwarders, the expansion itself matters as construction and heavy-haulage traffic on the B87 trunk road and the A9 and A13 motorways rather than as new airlift capacity. Military transport flights that do use Holzdorf serve the armed forces and are not available as bookable freight.
