## Description

On 10 March 2026 Hohhot Shengle International Airport cleared its port inspection and won approval as Inner Mongolia's first 4F-class airport, able to handle the Airbus A380 — and it is taking over from the ageing Baita field, open since 1958, under the IATA code HET. Hohhot is home to dairy majors Yili and Mengniu, and freight here is almost entirely belly cargo: dairy products, wool and e-commerce parcels. No significant freighter base has been established; the new airport is built for roughly 200,000 tonnes of annual cargo and is pitched as a node on China's Air Silk Road, with two parallel runways and a 325,000-square-metre terminal. For main-leg international shipments forwarders still route via Beijing (PEK/PKX) or Tianjin (TSN), four to five hours away on the G6 and G7 motorways. Short-haul links to Ulaanbaatar connect Mongolia and add a modest cross-border component. The relocation consolidates the city's passenger and cargo traffic at a single higher-capacity site south of the centre.
