## Description

Cargo reaching Hiva Oa comes in the hold of a passenger aircraft or on a ship, because Hiva Oa-Atuona Airport (AUQ/NTMN) has no freight facilities of its own. Air Tahiti is the only carrier, flying ATR turboprops to Papeete and between the islands to Nuku Hiva, Ua Pou and Ua Huka. The strip sits on a plateau roughly 450 metres above the Pacific, about 4.5 km north-east of Atuona, the southern Marquesas town where Paul Gauguin and Jacques Brel are buried. There is no cargo terminal, no customs post and no cold storage, so heavy or bulky goods travel on the mixed cargo-passenger vessel Aranui and other supply ships from Papeete, with air reserved for urgent freight, medicines and mail. Intercontinental shipments are handled at Tahiti Faa'a (PPT), some 1,400 km to the south-west, which is where French Polynesian customs clearance takes place. Searches still turn up the old identifier HIX, withdrawn by IATA in 2012; the valid code is AUQ.
