## Description

Runway 07/25 stretches about 2,287 metres, among the longest in Sri Lanka, and is now being extended to 2,500 metres as Hingurakgoda (HIM/VCCH) is developed into the country's sixth international airport, a phased project the government has costed at around LKR 17 billion. Until that work matures, the field roughly 12 km north of Polonnaruwa stays primarily a Sri Lanka Air Force base with thin domestic service, reopened to civil flights in 2012. There is no commercial cargo handling, no bonded warehouse and no cold storage on site. Shippers in the north-central region — rice, vegetables, garments, east-coast fish — use the cargo terminal at Bandaranaike International (CMB) near Colombo, about 200 km to the south-west, with Mattala Rajapaksa (HRI) a distant second option. Freight planning should only shift to Hingurakgoda once customs and handling are genuinely in place.
