## Description

A EUR 23 million rehabilitation of the runway, taxiways and apron at Hihifo Airport (WLS/NLWW) on Wallis has been running since mid-June 2026, covering some 115,000 square metres and carried out at night so flights continue, with 23,500 tonnes of material barged in by Colas from Tasmania via Fiji. The only international airport of the French overseas collectivity of Wallis and Futuna is served three times a week by Aircalin using Airbus A320s from Nouméa-La Tontouta, two of those rotations calling at Nadi in Fiji. There is no freight terminal, so air cargo here means belly loads on those passenger flights, while genuine consignments are consolidated at Nouméa and forwarded to Australia, New Zealand or France. Oversized items, construction materials and bulk goods reach the island by sea through the port of Mata-Utu, as the current runway project demonstrates with its barge rotations. Customs and border control fall under French authority, but the territory lies outside the EU customs territory, so shipments from Europe are handled as exports. Nadi (NAN) in Fiji and Nouméa-La Tontouta (NOU) act as alternates, with Vele Airport (FUT) serving neighbouring Futuna. A new control tower has recently been brought into service.
