## Description

Next door to one of the Pacific's busiest civil cargo gateways, Hickam (HIK/PHIK) handles none of that traffic: the Air Force side of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on Oahu is a military airlift base, closed to commercial freight. It hosts the Pacific Air Forces headquarters and the 15th Wing, flying C-17 Globemaster III airlifters and F-22 fighters in support of US installations across the Indo-Pacific. Hickam shares its runways with civilian Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), and every shipment bound for Hawaii uses that airport's facilities instead. HNL moved roughly 623,000 US tons of cargo in 2025, making it the state's air freight gateway; its terminals are run by operators including Aloha Air Cargo, Pacific Air Cargo and Delta Cargo, which also handle partners such as Korean Air Cargo, Japan Airlines Cargo, Qantas Freight and Kalitta Air. Customs clearance runs through the CBP office at HNL, and Hawaii's strict agricultural and quarantine controls on plants, fruit and animals apply on top of standard US import rules. Elsewhere in the islands, Kahului on Maui (OGG) and Kona on Hawaii Island (KOA) act as secondary points, fed from Oahu by inter-island flights and barge. Onward carriage on Oahu is short: the port of Honolulu, through which most of the islands' supplies arrive by sea, lies only a few kilometres from the airfield.
