## Description

More than 500,000 tonnes of air cargo moved through Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) in 2024, making it the leading freight station of the South Caucasus. The volume is driven by Silk Way West Airlines, whose Boeing 777F, 747-8F and 747-400F fleet flies around 350 monthly rotations to over 40 destinations across Europe, the CIS, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas, handling upwards of 420,000 tonnes a year. Azal Avia Cargo and flag carrier Azerbaijan Airlines also base their operations in Baku. The airport sits on the Middle Corridor (Trans-Caspian route), linking aircraft with rail and the Alat seaport on the Caspian to speed transit between China and Europe. Customs clearance runs through bonded warehouses and the free-trade zone at the Port of Alat. About 70 km south of GYD, a dedicated freighter-only airport is rising in the Alat Free Economic Zone: its terminal is due to open in April 2027 with initial capacity of roughly 400,000 tonnes a year, backed by a ground-handling joint venture between Silk Way Group and dnata. Until that project matures, GYD remains the region's central air-cargo gateway.
