## Description

Fierce downslope winds off the mountains — the local «luoshan» wind — made scheduled flying at Hengchun Airport (IATA: HCN, ICAO: RCKW) so unreliable that airline service ended in 2014. Sitting at the southern tip of Taiwan near Kenting National Park, the field now sees only occasional charter and government movements, and the runway suits smaller aircraft only. No cargo is handled on site: there is no freight terminal and no customs post. Pingtung County has been running a revitalisation programme aimed at upgrading the airport to international status with links to Hong Kong, Macau, mainland China, South Korea and Japan; trial approaches have taken place, but no regular operation has followed so far. Shipments for the Hengchun Peninsula and the Kenting tourism area travel by road to Kaohsiung International Airport (IATA: KHH) some 100 kilometres north, where belly and freighter capacity is available, with the port of Kaohsiung serving sea freight along the same corridor.
