## Description

Built to serve the copper mine at Palabora and the tourist traffic into the neighbouring Kruger National Park, Hendrik Van Eck Airport (IATA: PHW, ICAO: FAPH) lost its last scheduled service when Airlink withdrew on 10 June 2020. Today only charter and private movements remain, mostly lodge transfers. The airport has no freighter operations, no dedicated cargo terminal and no customs post, so mineral and general air freight moves overland to O. R. Tambo International (IATA: JNB). Travellers and shippers use Hoedspruit (IATA: HDS), about ninety minutes away and served by Airlink and FlySafair, or Kruger Mpumalanga International (IATA: MQP) some two and a half hours out. Forwarders therefore treat Phalaborwa as a charter and road-feeder point rather than an air-cargo station, while heavy mining output leaves the region by rail and truck towards Richards Bay and Durban.
