## Description

Despite its name, Henderson Field (IATA: MDY, ICAO: PMDY) on Midway Atoll is not a cargo hub but an emergency diversion field in the remote North Pacific. Owned since 2004 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and sitting within a national wildlife refuge, it has no control tower and serves mainly as an ETOPS diversion and emergency alternate for transpacific flights. The asphalt runway 06/24 measures about 2,380 metres; inbound aircraft call 100 nautical miles out, and frequency 126.2 is monitored from 08:00 to 17:00 and during approved movements. There is no scheduled passenger or cargo service, movements are restricted to night-time from November to June because of nesting albatross, and construction notices are currently in force for the airfield. For air freight, Honolulu (IATA: HNL), roughly 1,800 km to the southeast, is the nearest genuine cargo airport; station supplies reach the atoll by charter flight or by sea.
