## Description

Eastern Indonesia's commodity economy – rubber, palm oil and fisheries – finds its air outlet at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG) in Makassar, South Sulawesi. As the largest airport in eastern Indonesia and one of only three international airports on Sulawesi, it concentrates the export flows of a vast region. Domestic freight alone exceeds 5,000 tonnes a month, reaching about 6,021 tonnes in June 2024, handled through a dedicated cargo terminal. Garuda Indonesia Cargo runs international services, flying perishables such as live crabs to Singapore in loads up to 22 tonnes per flight. Ground handling is shared among PT Garuda Indonesia, PT Cardig Aero Services and PT Gapura Angkasa. The airport sits on the Makassar–Maros boundary, about 20 km from the city via tollway, giving exporters fast road access to the apron. For South Sulawesi's farmers and fishermen, UPG is where local harvests meet the Southeast Asian market.
