## Description

Named for Newton Brainard, a former Hartford mayor, this riverside field has operated since 1921, making it one of the oldest continuously running municipal airports in the United States. Brainard is a general-aviation reliever on the Connecticut River, handling business aircraft, flight schools and private flying so that nearby Bradley can focus on airlines and cargo. Its future is contested — Hartford officials have floated redeveloping the site for housing, while the Connecticut Airport Authority stated in 2025 that it has no plans to close it, amid tenant lawsuits and state-commissioned studies. The airport has never handled air cargo; commercial shipments make the short drive to Bradley (BDL).
