## Description

Hao Airport (HOI) is defined by its runway: at roughly 3,343 metres it rivals those of major international airports, a legacy of France's nuclear-testing era, when Hao served as the military support base for the Mururoa test site and received heavy transport aircraft. After the programme ended, the airport passed to civilian control in 2000; it had also been designated a NASA Space Shuttle emergency landing site. Today Air Tahiti operates ATR turboprops here and uses Hao as a redistribution point for smaller eastern Tuamotu atolls whose strips are too short for direct Tahiti flights. No scheduled freighter service currently operates; freight and mail move in belly holds or by ship. Air cargo is consolidated at Faa'a International Airport (PPT) in Papeete. The long runway nonetheless makes Hao the most capable diversion and resupply field in the eastern Tuamotu.
