## Description

In the far north of the Maldives, Hanimaadhoo International (IATA: HAQ, ICAO: VRMH) reopened on 9 November 2025 after a 136-million-dollar upgrade, built from January 2023 and backed by an EXIM Bank of India credit line. A lengthened 2.46-kilometre runway now takes international narrow-bodies such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737, and the new terminal is sized for 1.3 million passengers a year. Actual traffic is more modest: as of May 2026 only state-owned Maldivian served the airport, essentially to Malé, Kulhudhuffushi and Dharavandhoo, with Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) in India the single, partly seasonal international destination. HAQ has no dedicated cargo terminal: air freight rides in the belly of passenger flights and is in practice limited to express parcels, spare parts and perishables for the resorts and communities of the northern atolls. Heavier consignments and all intercontinental traffic route through Velana International (MLE) some 300 kilometres south, where Maldivian customs clearance is concentrated. A seaplane terminal for resort transfers has been announced as a further phase but is not yet operating; until then, distribution to the islands runs by speedboat and dhoni.
