## Description

Out on the eastern rim of Xinjiang, where the Gobi meets the Tianshan foothills, Hami Airport (IATA: HMI, ICAO: ZWHM), locally known as Hami Yizhou, connects its oasis city with Urumqi, Zhengzhou and Xi'an. Traffic is growing fast — around 247,000 passengers and 2,772 aircraft movements in the first quarter of 2026, up 29 percent year on year — but freight capacity remains limited to passenger belly-hold. During the harvest some of the famous Hami melons fly out this way; there is no freighter service and no dedicated cargo terminal. Larger shipments route through Urumqi Tianshan (URC), Xinjiang's main air cargo centre about 600 kilometres west, or eastward via Lanzhou (LHW). Hami's stronger logistics card is rail: the city sits on the Lanzhou–Xinjiang line used by China–Europe block trains, moving coal, wind-power components and farm produce, with overland customs handled at the Alashankou and Khorgos border crossings.
